John B Fairfax, AO President
John Fairfax, AO was a director of Fairfax Media from 2007 to 2010 after serving as Chairman of Rural Press since 1990. He began his career in 1961 as a cadet journalist at The Sydney Morning Herald and worked in management positions throughout Fairfax before joining the board in 1979. He joined the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 1972. He is a Director of Marinya Capital Pty Limited, Patron of The Red Room Company Ltd and was Chairman of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation 2008-2012. John is holding a picture of himself learning woodwork at an ealy age. Hitting the thumb and not the nail came a little later!
Cam Smith Chairman
Cam was a Private Client Advisor with RBS Morgans. Following a career in senior management of consumer goods manufacturing businesses in Australia and overseas, he became a Managing Director and CEO for 8 years in Sydney prior to joining the financial services industry. Cam has served on a number of boards, including a state confederation of industry advisory board and TAFE. Cam joined the Board of the Brigade in 1995. After serving as a Director and Company Secretary for 14 years, Cam took on the role of Chairman in 2009.
Michael Forsdick Treasurer
Michael is an Oxford University graduate with a Masters in Botany, a retired Chartered Accountant and former partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he specialised in personal tax. He is currently Chairman of Fauna and Flora International Australia and joined the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 2013. Michael is holding a photo of himself at age 10, in the front of the queue at school to have his flu vaccine. Back then, the shot was administered using a type of gun rather than a syringe.
Ruth Armytage, AM Director
Ruth joined the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 1990. She was formerly an early childhood educator and teacher. Ruth has been on other not for profit Boards which have focused on early intervention, young children and youth. Ruth is holding a picture of when she was ten years old, and at the official opening of Ruth Fairfax House (QCWA) in Brisbane.
Fiona Ratcliffe Director
Fiona is a Director at JBWere Wealth Management and has spent the last 27 years in the financial services sector. She is on the Advisory Committee to the Sydney Women’s Fund and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal Committee. Fiona was appointed to the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade at the commencement of 2011.
Kylie Macdonald Director
Kylie has over 25 years‘ experience in the Stockbroking and Wealth Management Industry – currently Principal of Morgans Financial, North Shore. She has served on various not-for-profit boards since 2001 focusing on youth mental health. Kylie was appointed to the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 2016. Kylie is seen holding a Santa photo taken when she was nine years old.
Graham joined the Board in 1987 after five years experience on the Board of another large children’s charity. He is a former partner and legal consultant with King & Wood Mallesons. He is holding a photograph of himself aged eight with his first pet dog.
Paul is a non Executive Director of Shaw and Partners Ltd and the Chairman of Cerebral Palsy Alliance. He is the former Country Head and Chief Executive Officer of Merrill Lynch in Australia. Paul is a past attendee of the Brigade and was appointed to the Board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 2010. Paul is holding a photo of himself attending The Girls & Boys Brigade in 1969.70. He and some other boys were adding photographs from a recent outing to a photo album.
Paul joined the board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in May 2015. He was a former Director and Treasurer for ING Bank NV in Australia with 30 years’ experience in the Financial Markets. Paul is holding a photo of himself at 6 years old. His dad had bought a speedboat and wanted to teach his 3 kids how to water ski on the Derwent River in Tasmania. Paul has wonderful memories of the cold, glass-like river on which he spent a lot of time falling over and a lot of energy laughing.
Andy joined the board of The Girls & Boys Brigade in 2020. He worked in the wholesale/distribution of manufactured goods for outdoor activities before embarking on a career in the banking sector. Following this, he gained an honours degree in Marine Biology. Andy currently sits on the board of directors for a variety of family investment companies and foundations.
