Creativity Takes Centre Stage:
Highlights from Our Newspaper Fashion Show
Recently, The Girls & Boys Brigade had the pleasure of hosting a Newspaper Fashion Show in our upstairs space. Not only was it a remarkable showcase of the children’s creativity and courage, but it also helped to honour the unique story of how The Girls & Boys Brigade came to be.
The year was 1882, and the newspaper business was booming. Many young paperboys spent their days selling headlines on street corners and their nights sleeping under wharfs or in back alleys. Recognising their plight, Sir James Reading Fairfax from The Sydney Morning Herald and A S Bennett from The Evening News founded ‘The Boys Brigade’ to offer support and safety.
Today, over 140 years later, The Girls & Boys Brigade continues this legacy. Our School Holiday Program offers children opportunities for learning, friendship, and creative expression, exemplified by our recent fashion show where they crafted outfits entirely from newspaper.
The children’s imagination and teamwork were on full display as they designed everything from ruffled dresses to suits of armour. After their creations were complete, they proudly showcased their designs on a makeshift catwalk — a T-shaped arrangement of tables — while a supportive audience of parents, volunteers, and staff cheered them on. Their excitement was palpable as they paraded their outfits to “What Makes You Beautiful” – a song they chose themselves.
A particularly touching moment involved a child who, initially nervous, gained confidence with each rehearsal and shone brightly on the runway. The encouragement from peers was heart-warming, highlighting the supportive spirit of the event.
The success of this fashion show has already sparked enthusiasm for future events, with children eagerly asking when the next one will be. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the supporters who made this event possible. Here’s to more innovative and inspiring moments at The Girls & Boys Brigade!
